Louis van Gaal has responded to criticism from Angel di Maria over his management of the winger.
Di Maria joined Manchester United for a club-record fee of £59.7million during Van Gaal’s first summer at the club, with the Argentinean arriving from Real Madrid.
Di Maria started the season well, scoring three goals in his first five games, but gradually struggled to make an impact.
Injuries played a part in a difficult season for the winger, while his attitude was also questioned, and the 28-year-old was utilised in a number of different positions by his manager.
Paris Saint-Germain signed the winger last summer to bring his one-year stay at Old Trafford to an end, and Di Maria hit out at Van Gaal’s treatment of him on Friday. Was he the Dutchman’s biggest mistake?
Responding to the comments on Friday, Van Gaal said: “I have never seen (many) players who looks at himself, who looks to the way they have performed here and that is always the fault of the manager.
“So he is one of the players who are in the row of players who have no self-criticism and, unfortunately, it is also my life as a manager. It is always like that.”
